Commissioned by the Columbus Foundation and built in Brazil, this replica of Columbus's ship "The Pinta" sits dockside on the Mississippi River in Winona, Minnesota on a sunny July morning in 2013.
The Pinta is a caravel, a common trading vessel. The replica is 15 feet longer and 8 feet wider than the original, which returned to Spain and subsequently disappeared from history. Caravels, which are excellent sailing ships with a high degree of maneuverability, were used as cargo boats, patrol boats and also as corsairs - what we call pirate ships.
Along with her sister ship, an exact replica of "The Nina", which is also a caravel, The Pinta tours ports along the Mississippi River. These floating museums give visitors a chance to step back in time and experience living history.
Specifications of The Pinta: Deck length - 85', Beam - 23', Draft - 7.5', Tonnage - 101, Sail Area - 3800 sq ft
