grave music
it was well past three
the lamp just doused
eyes closed
in grateful appreciation of blackness
drawn down over another day
a day mostly silent
but for the sighing of wood
in the fireplace funeral pyre
almost kidnapped by sleep
i heard it
hanging in the kitchen
a note
disembodied
short and not quite tuneless
another
another
nothing recognizable
again
again
single syllables ascribable to no instrument
no song
sitting up i lit the lamp
saw nothing
heard no more
but knew you had returned
to give me greeting in the only way you could
