While Waiting for Lunch
I sat on the patio by a rich woman's garden;
she's a friend of a friend who, I think,
dragged me along for entertainment value.
I don't know how entertaining I will be;
though I grew up surrounded by
the complacent, the wealthy,
and am used to their blithe social happiness,
what with the bloodshed in the world
their comfort in their insulation grates.
Nearby was a shed big enough to live in,
no doubt filled with the necessaries for her man -
not her husband, I mean the hired help -
to keep the garden beautiful, and on it
hung an antique bullet-ridden sign
having something to do with railroads;
it seemed an odd adornment for such a bucolic setting.
I sat there in the summer sun,
surrounded by peace and plenty,
serenaded by nothing but birdsong,
awaiting a luncheon that no doubt would be
fashionably perfect, perhaps even gourmet,
staring at that sign, and that pretty trilling chorus
was drowned out by the never-ending echo
of weaponfire and the cries of the fallen.
Though for the moment I was safe,
a lifetime away from carnage,
I wondered when - not if -
the scarlet waves would wash
to the very doorsteps of houses like this,
and how long any of us could be comfortable
in our skins, whatever their color.

Congratulations on your sale Gina! As always, your wonderful stories pull the reader/viewer into the emotions of the moment---real or not... L&F

Claudia O'Brien
I love this understated image and your so imaginative writing!
RC DeWinter replied:
Many thanks, Claudia, glad you like it. It's strict realism with small brushes...except the entire image is flipped horizontally. It just worked better that way.

I saw this sale go through yesterday and took a look there - it's quite a delightful building, especially charming as your title suggests because of the foliage and flowers surrounding it. Congratulations.

OH WOW!!! You are not only a very gifted artist but an amazing writer RC. I can see where the emotions if your wonderful works emasculate from. Your are what I would call an old spirt, I've met several people in my life like this but count myself lucky each time to meet and get to know the old spirits of this world. They are unmistakably blessings to the rest of us. L/F/FB/P I have a habit of blurting out what I think, hope that is ok. :)
