My Hanging Garden
Out on the stone patio I sit,
alone but for birds and insects,
contemplating the riotous greenery
falling in undisciplined waves
down the blue walls of the pit
that used to be filled with water -
thousands of gallons of it -
from a natural spring.
If I close my eyes
I can hear the shouts
of a pack of teenage boys
as they jump and splash
in its sparkling depths,
horsing around
in the rough and tumble
way of those shedding
the sweet soft skin of childhood,
their voices cracking
in the odd and unpredictable cadences
of all who relentlessly march
toward manhood.
But those days are long dead,
and now this great hole
is nothing but an empty shell
holding the detritus of the passing years:
leaves and pebbles,
twigs and the dried and flattened husks
of flying, hopping, crawling creatures
trapped in its neglected corners.
It also holds the invisible:
memories and heartbreak.
This great pool, Olympian in scope,
is now my hanging garden,
my Babylon of golden days
that, in my foolish and
undisciplined naivete,
I thought would never end.
But end they did,
and it is fitting that the wildness
of untrammeled nature
has reclaimed its own.
