Tonight the air is chill, heavy,
pregnant with the incipient tears
of smoky clouds hanging off to the west.
I can almost taste the rain as I sit,
wreathed in need and wanting
Time to reach into the mental paintbox,
erase this gloom with a vision of my choosing.
And of course I choose a moonlit starry night,
silver beams illuminating the garden,
blooming in the fullness of spring.
I paint myself walking, lighthearted, toward the gate
that gives out onto the velvet lawn
and then on into the tantalizing darkness
of the wood beyond.
And I know you are there waiting,
wearing your bracelets and chains
and not much else.
I begin to run, so eager am I to greet you.
But this is vain and foolish madness,
so I put down the brush,
gather up the cigarettes and other oddments
I carry on my person and go inside
to escape the coming rain, the chill
