consolatia
you left without a sound
vanished in the dark
no footsteps
no closing door
my heart
cratered by your going
is a hollow hall
where love swirls in the emptiness
smoky dreams washing in and out
on the tide of memory
i know there is a place
beyond this narrow vise
this icy slice of space
where you still breathe
because you
ever the trickster
have played your music in the midnight
left talismans only you could conjure
only i would recognize
when tears threaten to overspill the dam
i close my eyes and see you sitting
in the moonlight of another world
whole and happy
by the river cliffs you love
smiling
singing
laughing
counting stars
~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
A contemplative young man ponders the heavens above the cliffs along the Connecticut River in Haddam on a moonlight summer night. In memory of my son Eben, who loved to be there.
Reimagined and painted from a photograph by my niece, Hayley Coppola.

A second comment us due here. My place as the figure is a sure as night and day. The continued color and dancing light on these rugged lights. I have been here Gina. Love this. F/L
RC DeWinter replied:
Although the figure is not him, this is another piece for my son, who loved cliff-jumping into the river. Thank you so much.

Gina, your words and this painting are such a wonderful tribute to your son, Eben. For those I have lost your prose touches me deeply as I very often look skyward at the stars and sotto voce wishing them a safe and joyous flight through the cosmos. Another one of your beauties to add to my collection. F/L

This is gorgeous painting expressed in a beautiful way, though showing fragile, sad feelings so characteristic for your unique works- I like very much how you lay out all your thoughts in artistic way. l/f Wish you a Happy New Year, Gina!

Beautiful work RC and a well written verse. You should do a book on poetry with your illustrations. L/shared.

Beautiful and poignant words Gina. I love it. And this painting is gorgeous! Marvelous atmosphere and tones and light! He should feel lonely there, but to me he seems safe and welcomed by his surroundings. I love this! l/f!
