why did the universe
send me the one
meant for me
only to lock
his heart in chains?
it is your voice I miss
beyond all others
the world fell away
when you entered the arena
it's a hard habit to break
just when it's been put to rest
a stray thought ignites
that old poisonous desire
your voice plucks at my heart
like marauding fingertips
on harp strings
a dimly-remembered echo
of something wonderful
that could have been
confession is good for the soul
if not the heart
even when the answer is no
there are words that must be said
i have no regrets
