Hanged Man's Heart

The hanged man's heart, suspended upside down,
swaddled in the straitjacket of stasis,
aches to be released from its torment.
It has burst through the heavy door adorned with locks
but cannot let go of that crossbeam holding it captive.

"Oh to be free to feel, to reclaim all those parts of me
I've crippled for so long," he thinks,
"but I'm afraid that maybe I've forgotten how.
I bartered my humanity for sanity
but what a heavy price I've paid."

It will take a mighty blow from the axe of hope and courage
to loose him, and with his hands wrapped in rope
like twin prisoners in a gibbet, who will heft it for him?
Even if some worthy steps forward and cuts him down,
will he be grateful or merely snarl in an access of self-pity?
