One of the much-researched and written-about undercurrents in Victorian culture is the significance of violets to women, especially in the mid-to-late Victorian era. These were favored as gifts from women to women. Although not necessarily implying a same-sex relationship, violets were symbols of faithfulness and modesty that older school girls and women used as an expression of admiration for another woman. But much of the emerging lesbian literature of the times included violets - white or purple - as part of its thematic development. The most popular violet gift was a tussie-mussie, or nosegay, of violets. Cards such as the one depicted here were also probably sent and regarded in the same way.
