The Wise Maiden
All unexpected in the spring appeared
Baskets of blossoms left at the back door,
No giver's information volunteered
As to the person of this paramour.
She was delighted although mystified,
No suitor had stepped forth to offer claim
To her affection, never courtship plied,
But in her heart arose a hopeful flame.
After a time the sweet surprises checked,
No brimming baskets greeted her again,
She, disappointed, pausing to reflect,
Ascribed it to the perfidy of men.
No tears shed she over this false display,
Knowing true love would come another day.
