the efficacy of hawthorn(e) as a remedy for a bad mood
the night was fair but i was not
the day having been full of petty aggravations
i decided to take a quiet stroll
through the pocket park downstreet
and walk myself calm
it being may the hawthorn was in bloom
their riotous white blossoms glowed in the moonlight
and heavy with triethylamine
perfumed the park
with their complicated disturbing sweetness
i smiled to myself thinking how appropriate
such a virginal flower should carry
the primal scent of sex and death
that too often perfect couple
and having fallen into that quagmire
my punster mind turned to the scarlet letter
which was after all written by hawthorne
(yes i hear you groaning)
and certainly plumbed sex and death quite thoroughly
in its somewhat decorous new england way
i smiled again thinking how appropriate that
these trees would produce scarlet berries in the fall
it turned out to be a delightful walk
mindmoving from the chemistry of scent
to the lifecycle of the tree
to literature did the trick
banishing my own pettifogging annoyances
as inhaling deeply of sex and death
i rewrote hawthorne's tale
imagining hester as lizzie borden
not in the least repentant for her passionate fling with that cowardly fool
giving all those selfrighteous puritans forty whacks

The moon shines down on a small park with a row of blooming hawthorns, which are also known as the May Tree for the month in which they blossom. Reimagined and painted from a photograph shared by Jay Mantri.

RC, this is simply beautiful! Love the blossoms of the trees. I live where there are many blossoms like this and it is always beautiful! Nominated to 1000 Views FLP

These starry blooms and that 'complicated disturbing sweetness' you mentioned...oh how this does it for me. Love the directional lines also. F/L

All of it .. the imagery and the "description" are perfect on every level, Gina. One of my new favorites of your work. l/f

Stunning light and color, RC. I love the strong diagonal lines, both the expected lines of the edges of pavement and earth and the more irregular shoots of branches interrupting the density of the blossoms. I also very much enjoyed the poem, in all its ramblings and allusions. Fascinating in itself and left me with a wry little smile and a desire to delve more deeply into the chemistry of flower aromas and the meaning and symbolism of hawthorne blossoms - and of course to reread *The Scarlet Letter*.
RC DeWinter replied:
I appreciate your insights, Nikki. I felt exactly the same way about "The Scarlet Letter" after researching hawthorns. Thanks so much.

What a magical piece. Love the leading lines and contrasts. Your work has such a signature feel to it. I feel I could spot it on a wall and think - "That's an RC DeWinter". L
RC DeWinter replied:
That's good to hear, When I had my gallery exhibition people were a bit freaked out because I showed so many genres. Thank you, Lisa.

I really like your theme of including the moon in so many of your compositions. It adds a distinctive lighting to the artwork. As always, such beautiful textures, colors and composition in this one~ like/f

Gina, as always, phenomenal beauty here. I would love to spend all day viewing your site. Maybe I will! There is something I want to tell you but it would be better if I wrote in a private note. Hope all is well with you. Thinking of you.
RC DeWinter replied:
Always good to see you, AE, hope you've been keeping well. Thanks for the kind words and the visit.
