last rainbow
midday sky
black as pitch
split open
bleeding buckets
a torrent of heaven's tears
windshield smeared
driving impossible
into a parking lot
uncomfortable
alone in a dicey area
of a city not known for friendliness
all doors locked
eyes to myself
waiting out the storm
daylight a dream
a thousand pitchforks piercing clouds
black as any fire in a coal mine
sky growling
roaring
wind smashing rain into
every solid surface
shattering into liquid diamonds
pooling ankle deep
on pockmarked pavement
when it stopped
all of it
arcing across the gloom
a rainbow
glinting almost shyly
as though it too was reluctant to be found in that place
sitting mesmerized
the motley ribbon
reaching down
into the gut of that ugly pocket
of the world
longer
deeper
until its tail disappeared behind
the tops of far off trees
closing my eyes
fixing it firmly in my memory
expecting never to see another
