craving sweet

we're all looking for that sweet spot
the place it all comes together
the corner of the cosmos
where the stars align
into a celestial hammock
custom-made for every curve

the bitch of it is
the gods are cheap with the goods
they gift very few with the jackpot
most of us are left standing
in our clown suits
with random bits of the puzzle
that don't match up

you've got
the love but no money
so you fight about what you don't have
instead of what you've got
the money but no love
so you spend all that jack
trying to fill the hole where love belongs
and still feel lousy
the love and the money but you're really really sick
and after awhile you're too medded-up
and tired to enjoy either

looky here -
he's just retired with a pile
and a great-looking wife
but she doesn't love him
and cancer's gnawing him
from the inside out

here's a sweetheart
with a body that won't quit
and a guy who's crazy about her
too bad she's crazy too
about her sister's husband
and just lost her job
'cause of all that extra time she takes
for those long lunch hours

and over there -

well
you get my drift
i wonder what the odds are
on getting it all

the one you love who loves you back
the work you love that keeps the money
rolling in
the house
the car
the pretty kids if you want 'em
and two vacations a year
everybody healthy and happy
and mostly on the same page

or

fame and fortune
the adoration of the world
and people who jump
when you snap your fingers
the drug doc on call
to make you feel good when you don't
you only have to drive yourself if you want to
and who needs love
with all those pretty bodies to pick from?

or

whatever you think you need
to be
perfectly happy
every minute
of the livelong day

yeah i dream about that sweet spot
and just like you
i waste too much time
building my very own
personalized castle in the air
brick by invisible brick

but what would happen
to all these words
if i was so deliriously gloriously
fulfilled and always feeling fine?
