the winnowing
as the year dies in flames
i walk in the light of a moon
reflecting the false and gaudy brilliance
of a toxic sun
i am not alone
we are legion
tracing these same steps
into a dark unknown
we are the expendables
the unwanted
the ragtag army of undesirables
the poor
the old
the halt and lame
the foreign-born
the dark of skin
the worshippers of allah
the samesex lovers (as if it were a choice)
cogs in the wheel of greedy fortune
guilty of the unforgivable
only in the minds of madmen

The full moon shines down on the stunning autumn foliage in Mohawk Mountain State Forest and Park in Cornwall, Connecticut. Thanks to my nephew Brian Coppola, from whose photograph this is reimagined and painted.
