beyond beauty
it's the rare person
that doesn't long to hear
at least once
you're beautiful
i've heard it often
it's bullshit
meaningless
a skindeep gambit
usually uttered
by some inconsequential fool
who wants something
i am not prepared to give
after a life spent
in the company
of the outwardly beautiful
and i am not truly
i have learned
in a roomful of the beautiful
the eye is drawn
to that which is not
how much more compelling
are the original
the different
the unafraid
who stand proud
in their selfhood
rather than competing
in the shallow arena of small minds
