sro
i live in a spare room
i'm not talking the old-fashioned
saved-for-visitors spare room
i mean a plain room
unwindowed
the cell of an anchorite
unadorned
stripped to essentials
a narrow iron bedstead
a serviceable blanket
no pretty linens
just white
the floor uncarpeted
the dresser rectangular
uncluttered with keepsakes
i have none
life has robbed me of everything
but the instinct for survival
and even that wavers sometimes
my only concession to ornamentation
is the one unpaneled wall
painted like a chessboard
to remind me of how often
i have been checkmated
