Theotokos Speaks
When I look back,
remembering that awful day -
I was alone, about to fetch
some water from the well -
my meek and humble acquiescence
still surprises.
I don't know why I didn't
shake it off as just another madness;
I'd suffered from it, unbeknownst to all.
Perhaps if I'd been more courageous
none of that which followed
would have happened;
the world would have been spared
another madness.
But I did not.
Instead I knelt,
obedient, submissive,
hearing that which put me
in the realm of glory.
I never wanted
such a holy burden,
I would have much preferred
a life mundane,
another peasant passing unregarded.
I now live on in adoration's myth
and wear a haloed crown that obligates me.
And, cursing my acceptance
of such honor,
I wish I had been able to say no.

"Theotokos" is the ancient Greek name for Mary, revered in Christianity and Islam as the Mother of God, There are several literal translations of the word, including "God-bearer", "Birth-Giver of God" and "the one who gives birth to God." "Mother of God" is a less literal translation.
