Description
orlando
worn out
with the unclaimed freight of bankrupt words
lying heavy in the hold of my heart
i strangled the muse at sundown
and surrendered clothes and all
to sleep
the night was warm
the windows open to air not quite thick enough
to need the highpitched costly whine of a/c
and awoke to sirens
slicing through the pitchblack funhouse
of an interrupted dream
those sirens never stopped
the doomscream echoing round the room
maddened me
i shot down the stairs into the street
almost slipping in the bright red blood
filling my nostrils with the scent of death
i couldn't tell what happened and didn't want to know
because it happens all the time
sometimes around the corner
sometimes across the sea
and my knowing won't change a thing
every day blood flows
and the wind carries that acrid hemoglobin tang
to the four corners of this wretched earth
the sky was muddy with smoke and stars
and furious i stalked the pavement
trying to calm down
i found myself outside a church
a palace to a god who never was
its golden cross
a calf cast by charlatans
gleaming through the haze
if i'd had matches
i might have burnt it down
no god of love could sanction this
a world where manhood's marked by blood
and broken bodies
and killing is the remedy of choice
for difference
for disagreement
next time i'll close the window
flip the a/c high
better to pay the bill
endure the whine
than be trapped in blood and blackness
ankledeep in scarlet
surrounded by the evidence
of our delusions

A view of the upper section of St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is the oldest Catholic cathedral in the US. First built in 1718 and rebuilt three times thereafter, the current building retains many elements of the 1789 structure, when it was elevated to the status of cathedral, but was largely renovated in 1850.
Reimagined and painted from a photograph by Steve Hamburg.

Gorgeous work with a mystery story as well. You did say you murdered the muse at sundown. Hm. Great story too. I'll be wondering all day. :o)
RC DeWinter replied:
That's metaphor, Bunny...means I shut off the creativity and went to bed...and woke up to the horror of Orlando. TY
