i dress myself in the colors of bold
reds and purples and blues
but underneath the flamboyant display
lies a tenderness i hate to show

all too often i've opened myself
and all too often been torn
my costumes are a poor defense
and eventually fall away

don't be fooled by my gaudy attire
remember that underneath lives
a shyness and sweetness too easily bruised
by the careless hands of the world
