the beginning of the end
colorado grasslands
empty wideopen
moon shining behind us
he drove without speaking
down that ribbon of road
cut like a scar through
grim camouflaged scrub
pocked here and there
with poles and with fencing
all had seen better days
including us
hence the silence
under that moon we were fleeing
like refugees
destined for nothing
but darkness

A ribbon of road is indeed the best poetic description for this long stretch of moonlit road that leads off into the night. The Colorado grasslands lay slumbering off to the sides of the road, but the road calls, it drives my eye to travel the lonely stretch to discover what may lay beyond in the dark and distant night.

Thanks so much, this was an different approach for me at the time when I painted it, I'm glad it engaged you.
