In Saecula Saeculorum

I live in a house where the idiocy of the world
is broadcast throughout the day into the evening
for the entertainment of a woman who cannot
hear a thing at normal volume, who counts
the Lorna Doones when they are eaten.
At first I wondered why no one complained
about the racket from the open summer windows -
for though the air is suffocating, thick with unshed rain,
the air conditioner sits idle - she is never hot;
then I remember this is a neighborhood
of ancient women, past all but the killing of the clock.
There is no peace, no sanctity of thought;
the lives of plastic people never living anywhere
but in hack writers' minds take precedence
over the urgent truth of what affects us all.
I sit outside no matter what the hour -
in morning light, in bug-infested dusk.
