window of opportunity
gazing up in resignation
as i stand
reluctant but helpless
at the foot of the same grim stairway
i climb every day
i see a tricksy wind
lift the worn sad shade
from the window
proof that beyond these walls
is a living breathing world
where things change constantly
offering new possibilities
of redemption
firsthand knowledge of this
is denied me
for somehow i have become trapped
in this tenement tomb
i have gazed out that window
four stories above the ground
many times
gauging the distance
gauging my chances
one of these days
i'll make that leap to freedom
and if i smash to smithereens
when i land
i promise i'll die smiling
