Ghostly Gardens

It's an April twilight,
evening of soft mists and sweet green breezes
carrying the scent of summer as a tease.
I walk alone, not lonely,
delighting in the slyly winking stars
peeking through windswept clouds.

"Starlight, starbright" I chant
as down the sidewalk I wander,
stopping frequently,
admiring neighbors' flowers.

I had flowers of my own once.
I nurtured them from small dry husks
to watercolor beauty
but abandoned them
when the joy of their existence
was transformed by dour priests
to burdensome religion.

I never measured precisely,
only eyeballed the dimensions
and the placement of the plantings,
yet for years strangers came
to glimpse my gardens.
Helter-skelter, willy-nilly,
tucking here a fragile seedling,
putting there unruly rhizomes,
never making maps or pictures -
all spontaneous, my gardens.

So it seems I do with everything -
welcoming the unexpected,
embracing the surprise volunteer,
no grand design in mind for gardens or for life.

I know I irritate the cautious, alarm the careful,
shock the frightened.
That's too bad.
I never mean to.
But I can't - I refuse -
to lay out my future as one lays out a walkway.

No, I'll take life as it comes,
adjusting to the unexpected just as I grew my gardens,
cultivating whatever strikes my fancy,
ignoring the commonplace, the hothouse solutions,
the cheap and colorful flats packaged for the uncreative
in favor of the graceful and the wild, the sly surprise.

Ghosts of flowers and of lovers
crowd 'round this April evening.
My hands are dormant, my heart lies fallow.
Perhaps I will take up my trowel again,
plow dirt with restless fingers,
turn up rich black earth and scatter seed
along imperfect channels.
And if this means dividing or replanting,
or as I have done before, walking away
to find an unspoiled plot of ground,
so be it.
