chill october night of no sleep
mind too full of jigsaw thoughts
rather than lie there and stew
in my own sour juice
i rose
layered on warm clothes
and left the house
the moon was calling
in its silver voice
from down in the marsh
so i headed there
walking swiftly
to see what wisdom
might be waiting
i encountered nothing and no one
the only sound
the fallen children of oak
rucked by early frost
meekly complaining
as i crunched them
further into the earth
the path opened out
before the salt stream
like a runway to paradise
parting the reeds
i drew as close as i could
skidding and sliding
in the pliant mud
and there the moon
tucked up free and high
in a stardusted sky
waited for me
lifting my eyes
to its ancient face
