Last Sunset
A hot latesummer day,
we'd made that long car ride
to Maine,
a flying trip to see a school
you ended up not liking;
an irritable sort of day,
complete with getting lost
and being late for the grand tour
neither one of us enjoyed.
After an unimpressive meal in the caf -
pretty odd, now that I think on it,
for a school of the culinary arts -
we headed back across green lawns
to where we'd left the car,
again getting lost,
a few wrong walking turns
around some buildings,
endless faceless clones of muddy block.
Tempers short, we headed south,
dispirited at crossing yet another
off the list.
You told me not to fuss;
you weren't even sure
that cooking was for you.
I knew your confusion,
the blessing and the curse
of many talents
and the pressure to choose one
while starving out the other...
