Descant

I ran away to the city to drown out your voice;
the endless echoes pierced my chest -
stilettos of eternal sorrow.
I walked, a madwoman in a frenzy,
through midtown, long furious strides
in the middle of millions;
yet above the cacophony you sang, rippling,
a fluid wave washing through the urban jungle.

Finally, exhausted, blocks above the seething,
I rested, breathless, before a Beaux-Arts beauty of a building.
Its richness of color and craftsmanship
caught me as I stood, still vibrating in your thrall,
staring up, disoriented and not knowing why.
My eyes followed the mansard roofline
and I realized for all her ancient grandeur,
this grande dame was listing -
quietly, subtly, but definitely - to the left.
Not so much that it was dangerous -
it would never crash to the ground
in a beautiful mess of plaster and stone -
but jus...
