Wind Tunnel

It had been a wretched day,
full of petty annoyances
that had me chasing my own tail.
There was no escape; the relentless cold
kept me inside the claustrophobic box
that pretends to be a home but is really
a Devil's Island of mediocrity.

It all melted into a night blackened with
the sticky tar of despair;
I lay listening to the wind sing a winter dirge
that dredged up the barbed wire of
everything unresolved that would greet me in daylight.

Sleep was a coy bitch I didn't bother to chase.
Getting up, I sat by the window, gazing at
the frozen butter moon that hung,
pale and unforgiving, in a bitter blue sky
pocked with icy stars.

The treetops stood out in sharp relief,
bare branches jostling each other
as they were blown sideways and,
like me, unable to escape,
captive to the indifferent mercy of what is. <...
