do you not think it strange
that when you, strong,
flying freely, greenly,
on your mother branch
in breeze of spring,
through storm of summer,
we take you,
amazing as you are,
for granted?

do you hate us now
because it's only as
you're dying
brilliant at our feet,
curling with curdled
scarlet blood,
that we praise you
in our surprised
and foolish awe?
