no picnic
never quite at home at any table
i keep a low profile
mouth shut
quietly observing
in order to learn the rules
but the seat is splintery
i never can relax
people see my silence as haughty
the frightened bird inside
trembles in the presence of cats
for some life is one big picnic
but there is a fraternity of misfits
travelling alone and silent in the night
foraging for forgotten crumbs
fallen between the cracks
