Words to a Windy City
O Chicago, how I loved you,
though our affair was hurried, brief:
the clouds in the wild sky
rearranged by a conqueror's winds
over that landlocked ocean of a lake,
the push and intensity of downtown
day and night,
beer and baseball - beloved Cubbies! -
the gluttonous portions in every eatery,
and most of all your music -
that thumping heartbeat pervading all
with every shade of blue in the spectrum,
and then some.
I walked your streets in my skin without a shadow,
and when I finally lay down
I dreamed of blood and stockyards
and smoke so thick I could taste it in my sleep.
I miss you, Windy City;
though we may never meet again,
I carry your memory in that place in my heart
reserved for nothing but the best.
