Exhumation
The other day I found a box I had forgotten,
in the chaos of my recent peregrinations, to unpack.
This did not surprise me;
I have had difficulty, of late, keeping track.
I am a creature of habit;
I do not thrive in the maelstrom of constant change.
My gears shift slowly, reluctantly,
and sometimes not at all.
There are days when I am stuck in neutral,
except it isn't - neutral that is.
As self-contained as I may appear, inside panic reigns.
But here I go, wandering far afield
from where I started and intended to go.
Back to the forgotten box.
I was, naturally, curious to know what possibly vital possessions
I had been surviving without for so long a time.
Upon cutting the tape and pulling back the flaps
I found a motley assortment of memorabilia:
smudged and wrinkled scraps of paper
on which I'd scribbled indecipherable notes,
junk jewelry I haven't worn in years,
several books I'd forgotten I owned and meant to give away
and various other nonessentials that,
in my haste to clear out and move yet again
I'd in desperation tossed in without much thought.
At the very the bottom of this sad collection
of vitae interruptus lay something wrapped in a blizzard of tissue.
I unfolded the thin leaves of gauzy paper
but could not imagine what awaited discovery.
It was a rose, long dead;
it was clear I had taken some pains to preserve it.
Its brittle petals, though wrinkled, still held a good bit of color,
frozen as they were in the act of unfurling;
the stem was sturdy, unbent.
Lifting it gently, I combed through memories as I studied it,
trying to recall the whys and wherefores of this treasure.
Nothing surfaced.
I am not one obsessed with material keepsakes;
whatever prompted this careful embalming
must have been somewhat momentous.
But then, I have forgot so much.
I cannot recall the Latin names for flowers I grew
and tended for a dozen years,
nor my last phone number before the current one,
though I lived with it for seven years.
The first tentative touch of desire,
the last time I was properly, thoroughly kissed,
the feel of a lover's skin on mine -
all swirled away in a cyclone of amnesia.
Is it any wonder I cannot recall the importance
of this husk here in my hands,
when the memory of love is lost?

What a gorgeous beauty. I love this. You and I have much in common if this is self examination of habits. I love the story. I will now call unpacking boxes an exhumation from now on... unless I forget. :o)
RC DeWinter replied:
Hahahahaha, yes, it's fairly true to life, with poetic license, of course, Thanks much, Bunny.

This is a stunning photo painting, RC. I love the colours and the muted tones. Your personal story makes the piece that much richer.
