A Yorkshire Tale

Tossed out in the wilderness of rockstrewn moors,
the girl who was meant for a rich man's wife and the boy
who didn't belong there
Found in the other a twin.
Alike in their minds but different in longings
they twined their fortunes, they said, for all time.

For she wished his freedom and he for her birthright,
Then could he be that rich man and she the wife of him that
he'd become.
So it was settled.
His fortune would be her cloak of freedom,
Her promise his dream made flesh.

And, if escape to the vast open spaces in which
they lived their lives was impossible, they sat, the two,
seeming decorous
