Speaking of Sundown
I stand on the shore watching the sun go down,
marvelling at the ease with which it sinks
into the arms of the sea,
a lover surrendering to oblivion.
Every sunset is a kind of death,
but time and again that golden orb rises
from the dead, putting the resurrection
of Jesus to shame.
I hope when it is time for me to slide away
to wherever it is my atomic energy will go
I can be like the sun - beautiful, graceful,
accepting of the pattern foreordained.
