unmasking the bear

i dreamed of bears,
or rather,
a bear.
it stalked me everywhere
i walked in that mistshrouded country
i enter when i sleep.
it was always there,
this bear -
emerging from deep woods,
appearing suddenly upon my porch,
clawing powerfully against whatever door
i closed,
trailing me with primal purpose.
i ran, and felt it coming right behind.
i hid, and heard it clawing through the entrances
to my every refuge.
no sanctuary could i find that the bear would not discover.
i knew not where this beast had birthed nor
why it was intent on my destruction;
all i knew was that it sought me as its prey.
i told you of the bear.
you puzzled with me on the terror
this shadow predator cast upon my waking.
