Lady Macbeth's Lament
Now left alone to ponder my great sin,
I recognize I dwell among the damned.
I close my eyes, great waves of blood wash in;
the map of Hell is thus well diagrammed.
Not only my own soul have I condemned,
but also that of he who would be king.
The Devil has us well and truly hemmed;
no prayer can any deliverance bring.
My hands are marked indelibly in red
for all the world to see; outcast am I.
the future promises nothing but dread,
for such a sin no one can justify.
What fools to trade salvation for a throne;
as regicides we ever shall be known.
