you no doubt think
i'm brave and brash,
brutally well-equipped
to take on the world.
one can be honest and kind
and honest and brutal as well.
does honesty equal wisdom?
how often has my truthtelling
come back to bite me!

watch me undress,
you shall see
the frail flower
underneath.
i open my hands.
they're empty.
i turn out my pockets.
they're empty too.

i own nothing of value
to the material world,
my treasure is intangible.
extending a hand
to touch that world
i touch instead
a wall of glass,
keeping me from my
appointed task,
my screams smothered,
soundless.
