Vincent came to me in a dream again, and this time we were not in New Haven but in Amherst, Massachusetts. It was a beautiful spring evening and we were walking in the almost deserted downtown enjoying the sunset and talking of the inconsequential. Although I knew he could be opinionated and vehement, tonight Vincent was thoughtful and somewhat preoccupied.
He was carrying a sketchpad and fiddling nervously with a pencil as we walked. We turned down a side street away from the main center of town and soon came to a covered alleyway demarcating two large buildings.
Vincent gestured, indicating he'd like to explore it, so we entered the alley. I was enjoying the moodiness of the half-light with the sunset shining in at the other end, but Vincent was galvanized. I suppose it was something about the somewhat eerie atmosphere in that tunneled alley. He stopped and began to draw, his eyes darting from side to side, hardly glan...
