To A House Forsaken
A ramshackle house in a midwestern town,
abandoned, forlorn, fading slowly away,
the once-vibrant paint streaked with mold and decay.
Like a ten-dollar whore in a frayed tattered gown
on a corner it waits for the sun to go down.
Windows like eyes that have seen too much grief,
no glass to defend what might still live inside,
unlovely and empty, its tears have been cried.
The passage of time is a treacherous thief,
the slam of the wrecking-ball welcome relief.
But I find you beautiful, even in ruin,
and mourn your decline into blemished neglect
that no hand of man can be turned to correct.
I'll stand here awhile on this hot afternoon,
companion to craftsmanship jilted too soon.
