Antiphon
You ask me now to shed my tattered cloak,
array myself in garments chose by you,
to cast away my silver and my smoke,
to paint myself in Brigid's fiery hue.
"Throw off the shadow, put on cloth of gold,
let me design a countenance more fair,
more pleasing for the world to now behold
than that dark ink that stains the skin you wear."
You would sand smooth the rough and ragged edge
and chisel clean the motley pitting there.
To all improve my future, do you pledge,
refashion happiness from my despair.
But this I say to you and listen well,
hold my instruction close, I beg you now:
I own my path to heaven or to hell,
it's none of yours to scorn or disavow.
I'll tell you not which forked road to choose,
nor strip the feathers from your daylight wings,
nor which cup to accept, which to refuse,
so leave to me my dark and needful things.
