in the shadow of natural bridge
cool water
flows underneath stone
an archway
created
by the falling of weakened
shelves of ceiling rock
beauty born
in the chaos of
destruction
still standing
as a monument to the
power of nature
reminding
us of the hidden
flaws in strength
persistence
can be the undoing of
the hearts of mountains

A view of the natural stone arch carved out by an ancient river in Natural Bridge State Park, Virginia. The remaining limestone dates to the Ordovician geologic period of approximately 470 million years ago. Cedar Creek, a tributary of the James River, runs through the arch today. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Thomas Jefferson once owned the land where the park is located, and it has been speculated that George Washington may have surveyed the area before that.
Painted in digital oils from a 2006 photograph released to Wikimedia Commons by Stephen Kellam.

A gorgeous painting. This was a place I wanted to stop when I was working and never got to. I love your poem as well. Excellent work.
