good housekeeping
i'm not and never will be fanny
or betty
or martha
i never see dust
last night's stale coffee sits cold
on the desk in a welter of ashes
and papers and pens
magazines everywhere
mixed up with old mail
books are my bibelots
cobwebs my lace
my wardrobe the quilt on the bed
the bathroom won't kill you but
watch for stray shoes and the cat
i water the plants when i can remember
some flourish but oh well some don't
disorganization is my hallmark art form
i live in my head and the house goes to hell
except for the kitchen - the wonderful kitchen!
windows with light streaming in
where when i can't think anymore
i potter about making intricate pastries
and soup and fresh bread even pasta
and sometimes a pie
maybe meat maybe fruit
depends on my mood
and what's in the fridge
and then i ring up my bravest of friends
(the ones who won't tut at the mess
or sneeze from the dust
or fuss about putting things right)
we eat and we drink and we talk
and we laugh
and they always but always do dishes
it's no way to live says my mother
as she turns and stomps out of the house
after yet another visit
just to make sure i'm not dead
good riddance i mutter and thumbing my nose
i'm alone in my comfortable mess
writing and painting and thinking and dreaming
the mop and the vac nestled snug in the closet
while yesterday's paper screams to be read
and the cat yells for dinner at five
and a good thing he does or he might never eat

mundane comes to life. Beautiful representation of the fact that ART is all around us.

This is an inviting kitchen with its light and dots of blues ambers in green. I do not like many kitchens, but do this one. I hate to cook. This kitchen feels cozy and lived in. This light as in so many of your pieces is delicious. F/L

This is my cousin's kitchen...well, a cleaned-up version...LOL...I love a big kitchen and do enjoy cooking. Food is very social for me and there was a time I entertained, informally, frequently. It has been too long since I have had a reason or opportunity to do so. I am forgetting how...sigh. Thanks for your kind insights and encouragement.

Magnificent painting and poetry. At first I stopped here as it looks like my friend's kitchen, but the poem is about me. l/f/tweeted

Once again you paint the memories of the collective women of the 1950s early 60's. I see this house on Cape Cod, though. I can feel the sea light streaming though the panes. Love the line , "Cob webs are my lace".You paint such a warm and friendly place in both time and space. FAC tw fav

Wonderful specks of bright color punctuate this kitchen scene....you have found such beauty in the ordinary. I really enjoyed reading your writing/description that goes with this piece. like/f
