The Fantasy of Fantasy Island
Sick in the soul,
I ran away to the island,
seeking a cure for the canker
gnawing me from the inside out.
Armed with expectations and hope
I flew in the teeth of the wind,
consigning the anchor of reality
to the depths of the great salt ocean.
When I arrived I met nothing
but more of the same, only differing in degree.
Fantasy collided with truth and, as always,
truth beat fantasy to a bloody pulp.
"Foolish dreamer!" cried the universe.
"Don't you know there is no cure
for that pernicious malady
unless manufacture it yourself?"
And I, no chemist, no physician,
only a five-year-old in ancient skin,
hung my head in shame
at having been caught out once again.
