april jeremiad
when la primavera finally tamed
the lion of winter
who for far too long gripped the world
in his greedy jaws
i threw myself
almost eyelevel with wildflowers
onto the newtgreen grass out back
while just-hatched many-legged creatures
with no idea of the abbreviated duration
of their being
crawled fearless everywhere
exploring the patch of ground they would know
as their only home
the sun smiled
showering everything in its soft spring radiance
as marshmallow clouds sailed the sea
of a sky serene in its steady blueness
i lay staring up at that vast openness
wanting to lose myself in the beauty
of the newborn world
all the while envying the ignorance of
those small crawlers
wishing i had no knowledge
of the abbreviated duration of my own being
blake saw heaven in a wildflower
(that thought always made me snort)
i fixed my gaze on one
and saw yet another unconscious life form
with no obligation other than to follow
the narrow curve of its biological imperative
deaf to the ticking of the time bomb
free of loneliness fear envy guilt jealousy
the longing for love
and any expectation of such a thing
as an afterlife
all the while being admired for its beauty
and then found myself halfass agreeing with blake
it would be heaven to be a wildflower

The wildflowers are Desert Gold, a member of the sunflower family, shown here as part of this year's amazing superbloom in Death Valley, California. The flowers are a detail from a large landscape photograph by Steve Hamburg that I extracted, re-imagined and painted into a sky.
