Missing Foxglove
In a life that now seems like a dream
I had a garden, the envy of the county -
or at least the town;
strangers drove down the cul-de-sac
and turned around, pausing, to admire it.
Flowers and fruits, shrubs and vegetables
were laid out in plots scattered in the English way
with a studied casualness that took
more than a decade to achieve.
Not least of all there flourished
herbs and medicaments for health and magick,
harvested at the height of their blooming
for later use.
I was particularly proud of these,
formulating the ancient remedies
for everything from colds to sleeplessness.
In a nod to the gods of old I even grew woad
with which to stripe myself in blue.
And standing tall and proud was a swath of foxglove,
with rainbow-hued blossoms belying its power
to prompt the sluggish heart.
I miss those most of all, for mine
is so in need of reawakening.
