prayer meeting
this house is stifling
crowded and airless
with the clamorous ghosts
of childhood
if i do not escape
i will surely suffocate
sadness will fill my lungs
poisoning me for sleep
and so
jacketed against the cool
new england night
i take myself out
and down the street
to where i can breathe
the marsh is quiet
the peepers silent
in the almost frost
the reeds keep their counsel
as the stream ripples in
from the sea
silver salt shining
in diana's smile
time was
i would have been afraid
to stand here alone
surrounded by nothing
but nature
sure that in the shadows
lurked demons
ready to eat me alive
that nonsense died long ago
now i celebrate
the embrace of
this open cathedral
that cleanses me
of old ghosts and demons
alive only in the shadows
of memory
all washed away
during this silent communion
