devil's diamonds
got a postcard from a friend
one of those scenic vacation things
from way out west
there was the tower
scarred as though
the fires of hell had melted
flesh into a chiaroscuro
of ugly memories
and in the sky there hung
the devil's diamonds
promising everything
a fool could want
i thought of you
my devil
and how everything
you ever gave was nothing
but delusion
junk jewels for a fool
too ready to trade the soul
for the promises
of a forked tongue
and when i put that necklace on
it burned clear through my flesh
and sizzling sank
dead rock on a dead landscape
blighted by the drought of truth
