How often did we walk that moonlit path,
both victims of dark memories awake,
both seeking solace in the aftermath
of all our sins, of every grave mistake.
You touched my heart with all that you confessed;
love blossomed in the loam of sympathy.
So skillful were you I could not have guessed
you wore a mask fashioned to dazzle me.
When I offered what I believed you sought
you trampled on what you had caused to bloom,
denying love was ever in your thought,
seeming surprised that I could so presume.
How brave you were with weapons on ramparts,
But only cowards toy with people's hearts.
