You ushered me into a room
lit with a thousand twinkling stars,
pulled out my chair and ordered the wine.
I was dazzled by the fairy lights
and your courtesy;
we toasted the future,
began undressing ourselves metaphorically,
sharing a slice of this and a tidbit of that,
delicate appetizers to the main course -
our true selves - at least as we see them.
I forgot the time and place
and never noticed as the night grew cold
until you leaned in, whispering,
"My dear, you're far too old."
