Gustav had been among the missing for some time after bringing my belated birthday cake by, but I seldom worried too much about him. Despite his advanced age and penchant for romancing young women likely to kill him with their energetic passion, he ate healthily and well, drank very little and continued to paint. Nevertheless, I was glad to hear from him last week, sounding as alert and sassy as ever.

"Hallo!" he boomed through the phone. "I have been hobnobbing with minor European royalty and have a new portrait to show you. I will be by not long from now and I am bringing teacakes also, so you will please put on the kettle."

Before I could get off a crack about the portrait probably being a nude of his latest inamorata or ask why in the world he wanted tea in the middle of a hellishly hot July, Gustav had hung up. He arrived about forty minutes later, hauling a wrapped canvas and a baker's box tied with string and panting slightly after climbing the endless stairs to my top floor aerie.

"It's a good thing I only put on the water just now," I said as he entered, "otherwise it would have all boiled away and scorched the pot."

"Don't be so disrespectful," he answered dryly. "Let me show you my latest before the tea."

Putting the box on the coffee table, he propped the canvas on the couch and, with the air of a Las Vegas magician, deftly pulled off the wrapping.

"Here she is - la Principessa Raucci, daughter of Cosmo of Piedmont."

And here you see la principessa in all her splendor.
