Basement Meditation

I'm standing at the top of those stairs,
thinking,
"Maybe this is it. Maybe this is the time to fall."
Because there's so much waiting for me there,
and I'm so tired.
Most of it's junk, with a few treasures
buried deep out of sight.
I often wonder if they're worth reclaiming;
then I look back at my usual run of luck.
If the past is any predictor of the future
I would hurl myself down those stairs and live,
paralyzed and helpless,
for another twenty or thirty years.
And then I think about the way things are,
and realize that would only be
an outward manifestation of my interior landscape,
for in every way but locomotion I am paralyzed and helpless.
So I leave it, as I always do, for another day.
Sighing, I turn and close the door;
I can't face what's waiting for me there.
